Mufasa leads global markets; Sonic 3 performed better in domestic markets
Mufasa, directed by Barry Jenkins, received a significant audience in international markets. Despite mixed reviews, the live-action film is making waves at the box office. It is expected to gross over US$700 million globally by the end of its theatrical run.
Although The Lion King prequel is a hit in overseas territories, it underperformed at the domestic box office. Actually, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released on New Year, has performed better than Mufasa in America. Sonic 3 overtook Mufasa in local markets and is set for a stellar theatrical run.
According to reports, Mufasa’s total earnings in the US are around USD 170 million, and it is heading towards the USD 200 million mark. On the other hand, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has collected around USD 190 million in the domestic markets and is all set to enter the USD 200 million mark by this Saturday.
While Mufasa’s final gross is expected to be between USD 230 million to USD 260 million, the target for the new year 2025 release is around USD 250 million to USD 270 million.
Sonic 3’s worldwide gross is expected to be approximately US$550 million by the end of its theatrical run, approximately US$150 million below Mufasa’s global expectations.
Let us tell you, Mufasa: The Lion King was released on December 20, while Sonic 3 was released on the big screen on January 3. Mufasa’s overseas performance is a testament to the popularity of its prequel, while Sonic 2 was a success solely due to its strong reception in local markets.
