In India, the smartphone market of Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 is already crowded with convenience-pack options. Nevertheless, Motorola has succeeded in creating a niche for themselves by focusing on devices that offer a strong value-to-demonstration ratio, especially in the Middle-Merndium segment. While the company has expanded its lineup with models such as the Moto Edge 50 Ultra, which provides a flagship -like experience under Rs 50,000, it is yet to introduce a high -end flagship operated by a chipset like Snapdragon 8 General 3 or Snapdragon 8 Elite. We have wondered why this is so, especially Motorola contestants have continued to launch top level equipment to complete power users. In a special interview with India Today Tech, Shivam Ranjan, head of marketing at Motorola India, answered the question.
Ranjan says that Motorola works with major chipset manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek, but the onset of high -end flagship will eventually depend on market demand. “We are constantly working to identify the right chipset for the right products at the right price points with our chipset partners. If there is a significant demand for a product with a particular chipset, we will definitely evaluate it,” Ranjan said.
For now, the company’s focus remains on expanding its appearance in the mid-drawmium segment, where it has made considerable progress. Ranjan said that Motorola currently holds around 8 percent market share and has climbed the sixth or seventh position in India’s smartphone rankings. “Two years ago, we were not even in the top 10. Now, we are in the top six or seven. And the difference, if you see, we have received about 8 percent shares (at this time),” Ranjan said. The IDC has shared similar estimates in its 2024 India Market Share Report, claiming that Motorola has seen a 135 percent increase in market share between 2023 and 2024.
Talking about the company’s future roadmap, Ranjan says that Motorola has set an ambitious target of becoming the third largest smartphone brand in India by the end of 2025. “The gap between us and the top three brands is not much,” he said.
Motorola has maintained a consistent design language in its Moto Edge Series, using premium content such as vegetarian leather, pearl finish and even wooden back panels. Addressing concerns about design uniformity, Ranjan reported that this stability strengthens brand recognition. He said, “Consumers who own the Motorola device should feel a sense of pride, and others should be able to identify it immediately. Also, we offer a variety of materials and finish to separate our devices,” he said.
Asked about the user that the new Moto Edge is aiming to address 60 fusion, Ranjan described it as a well -balanced smartphone, rather than a performance competes purely on a performance benchmark. He exposed other people with military-grade certification, 5,500mAh battery, 5,500mAh battery, and 50-megapixel dual rear camera setup with a 1.5K curved display, MediaTek Demistance 7400 chipset, leather back panel, slim and lightweight design.
On the theme of the upcoming launch, Ranjan avoided sharing specific details, but indicated that Motorola’s release timeline may follow a pattern similar to last year. “When I can’t comment on future smartphone launch, if you look at our launch strategy last year, you will see that we follow a stable stream of release in the next two to three quarters,” Ranjan said.
The company introduced only the Moto Edge 60 fusion, but it is yet to launch the Moto Edge 60 Pro, Edge 60 Ultra and Edge 60 smartphones. Edge 60 is already coming out in leaks with Pro, this may be the next in line. Since its preceding came in April 2024, the launch could be a few weeks away.
