How did the controversy escalate?

Ranveer was announced as the new leader In 2023, playing the role that was previously played by Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. Fans were curious, divided, and excited about the new chapter of the franchise.

However, after that initial discussion, the project went quiet. There were no major updates on the cast, shoot schedule or release plans. That silence gave rise to speculation.

Later reports suggested creative differences between Ranveer Singh and Excel Entertainment. Some claimed that Ranveer was unhappy with the repeated delays and lack of a locked script. There were also reports that he wanted a darker, serious version of Don, while Farhan Akhtar preferred to stay closer to the tone of the previous films.

Reports also said that matters worsened when Ranveer learned that the producers were considering other casting options while he was still attached to the film. Soon after, news of his exit became official.

FWICE took action

The matter later escalated beyond professional disagreements. Industry reports claim that Excel Entertainment has sought damages of around Rs 40-45 crore from the actor citing pre-production losses. The matter was reportedly taken to the Producers Guild of India for mediation before reaching FWICE.

FWICE chief advisor Ashok Pandit said that Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani had personally approached the federation. He said major expenses had already been incurred, including overseas recce trips, hotel bookings and arrangements for more than 200 crew members. Pandit also said that Ranveer has signed a three-film deal with Excel Entertainment and he was involved in script discussions and announcement shoots.

On May 25, FWICE issued a non-cooperation direction against Ranveer, alleging that he did not respond to repeated requests to appear before the body. Pandit said that affiliated workers across India would not work with him on films, commercials or other projects until he personally addressed the matter.

Ranveer did not comment directly. His team later said that they have “deliberately decided to maintain silence” and continue to have “deep respect and goodwill” for everyone associated with the Don franchise.

Mika’s own FWICE history

Mika’s support has drawn attention as he also faced FWICE action after performing at a wedding in Karachi, Pakistan in 2019. Reports at the time said the program was linked to an aide of former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

The move sparked backlash and FWICE imposed a temporary ban. The directive was later canceled after Mika met officials, apologized and said that his appearance on the program was “just a coincidence”.
