Microsoft finishes passwords for new accounts, says you should use something better
Microsoft has announced that all newly created Microsoft accounts will now be passwordless by default. It is also urging its old users to remove their passwords to better protect their accounts.
Listen to the story

Microsoft has announced that new Microsoft accounts will no longer require passwords. Instead, the company is naked to use them to use Pasaki. The idea is that users fully shift to a password -free world and use modern, safe options such as passakies, facial identification, fingerprint authentication, or safety keys.
Microsoft says it wants to do so for almost a decade. The company first began searching for passwordless sign-in with the introduction of Windows Hello in 2015. Since then, it has added frequent support for more secure methods of authentication. According to the company, today, more than 99 percent of their users who log in to Windows with Microsoft account do not use passwords, but choose other options such as biometrics or pins.
But why is Microsoft going to passwordless?
The answer lies in both security and purpose. Traditional passwords are unsafe for fishing, brut-force attacks and human error. Microsoft also highlighted the vulnerability by reporting that it currently detects about 7,000 password-based cyber-halls-more than doubled at the rate seen in 2023. So cyber criminals develop their strategy, cracking a password has become an easy task to bypass digital security. Therefore, instead of passwords, the company now wants to use the passki to users who are theoretically more secure.
What is Pasaki?
Unlike passwords, passkeys are said to be quite secure and user friendly for authentication. This is a standard-based form of certification developed in partnership with Fido (Fast Identity Online) Alliance. Fido has designed passwords for online sign-in and companies such as Microsoft, Apple and Google, and Google is part of this alliance.
In its heart, passKeys take advantage of Cryptographic keys, which are commonly stored on the user’s device (like phone or computer -like) and are associated with their biometric data (fingerprint, face ID) or device pin.
Therefore, given their nature of biometric authentication – Pasaki cannot be reused by someone else, stolen into data violations, or is subject to a fishing attack. It also eliminates the need to remember the complex wire of the characters that users need to make them virtually unhealthy.
According to Microsoft, a user signed with passki is three times more successful – to log in compared to someone using a password, with a success rate of 98 percent compared to just 32 percent for the latter.
Not only this, the sign-in using the passke is also eight times faster. “According to the Fido alliance, more than 15 billion user accounts can now signed to use passkeys instead of passwords. But we need billions to make every sign-in password free,” called Microsoft.
Meanwhile, to encourage this change from password to passage, Microsoft has also rolled out a new sign-in interface that prefer password-free options. The company says that it streamlines the new design process and first highlights the safest and convenient methods.
And moving forward, any newly created Microsoft account would be “passwordless by default”. This means that Microsoft will not ask new users to create or remember. Instead, users will be given the option to choose from the safe sign-in options from the beginning. Microsoft also said that in this change it is not leaving existing users either. The company is offering options to users, if they want, remove their passwords.
