At the age of 16, Dutt started his career as a telephone operator in a mill in Calcutta (now Kolkata), where he received a modest salary of Rs 30–40 per month. He worked tirelessly to support his family, his early days were full of struggle and resilience.
A turning point in his life came when his uncle got him a three-year contract with Prabhat Film Company in Pune. Here, Dutt developed his skills and formed lifelong friendships with actors Rahman and Dev Anand. The latter will play a key role in Dutt’s directorial debut, cementing his entry into the world of filmmaking.
Dutt began his acting career in 1945 with a small role in Vishram Bedekar’s film Lakhrani. However, it was his work as a director and producer that made his mark in Indian cinema. During his career, he directed eight Hindi films, many of which achieved cult status.
Guru Dutt’s films reflected his unique vision and deep understanding of human emotions. His works include Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Mr. & Mrs. 55, Aaron Paar and more. He breathed his last in 1964 at the age of 39 due to an overdose of sleeping pills.
