Marvel Studio has released a high anticipated trailer for its 2025 film The Fantastic Force: First Steps, revealing a major surprise – actor Julia Garner will portray Silver Surfer. Traditionally, a male Marvel Comic Book character, The Silver Surfer has been re-prepared as a female version called Shala-Bal in the film.
Garner, who is known for his Amy-winner turn in Ozark, makes his dramatic entrance in the trailer, warning the fantastic force: “Your planet is marked for death.” While Shalla-Bal is an established character from comics, he has rarely made headlines, which is still in the headlines as a silver surfer.
New era, new universe
Directed by Matt Shakman, the film occurs in a retro-futuristic 1960s Manhattan. It brings Marvel’s classic “First Family” – Reid Richards, Suu Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grim – in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is a reboot and does not directly connect to the existing Marvel films, at least for now.
As reported by Newsweek, artists include Pedro Pascal as Reid Richards, Suu Storm as Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and ibon moss-bachcharach as Ben Grim. Ralph Ineson offers the voice of giant cosmic supervisor galactus.
What’s next for Fantastic Four?
The Fantastic Four: First Steps are set to release in theaters on July 25, 2025. This was followed by Avengers: Doomsday and The Gigatic Crossover Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. The trailer indicated in a potentially subplot that involves the pregnancy of Su Rotte – possibly the birth of Frankin Richards, a powerful character in the comics.
This is the first time a woman will portray Silver Surfer in a central role within a Marvel film.
