In a strange twist to gaming, a New Jersey man took his online gaming dispute into the real world by flying from New Jersey to Florida and settling the score with a hammer. Yes, you read that right. According to a report from the Associated Press, 20-year-old gaming enthusiast Edward Kang now finds himself behind bars facing some serious charges. He charged with second-degree murder and attempted armed robbery while wearing a mask. Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper expressed it best when he said, “Some things you just can’t make up.”

So, what was the reason for this hammer fight? Kang and his victim, another young gamer around his age, were both avid players of ArcheAge, a medieval fantasy MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). The game’s publisher recently announced the shutdown of its servers in Europe and North America, much to the dismay of its players. However, no one could have predicted that it would reach this level of madness.

Kang told his mother he was going to visit a friend he met online, packed his bags and flew from Newark, New Jersey, to Jacksonville, Florida, last Thursday. How he figured out his gaming rival’s exact location remains a mystery, but after arriving in Florida, Kang booked an Uber to go to a hotel in Fernandina Beach, about 35 miles from Jacksonville. He then stopped at a local hardware store to buy a hammer.

Armed and prepared, Kang arrived at the victim’s home around 2 a.m. on Sunday. The house was unlocked, allowing Kang to easily break in. Luckily, the victim was just leaving his bedroom when an enraged Kang confronted him and without hesitation, brandished a hammer.

A struggle ensued and in the chaos, the victim called for help. His stepfather rushed over and helped restrain Kang until the police arrived. The victim suffered multiple blows to his head but was lucky to survive with no serious injuries and was treated in hospital.

When questioned by authorities, Kang described his victim as an “online bad person,” and also asked about the prison sentence he would receive for his crimes. Sheriff Leeper responded appropriately: “I would say Mr. Kang, it will be a long time before you play video games again.” Kang is currently held in custody without bail, and his future gaming sessions are on indefinite pause as he faces the consequences of his hammer-inspired vengeance.
