Following in the footsteps of Naomi Campbell, here’s everything you need to know about the historically relevant UNESCO site.

  • Goree is a small island located off the coast of Dakar in Senegal, West Africa. The narrow streets of this area are lined with former colonial buildings that have now become monuments and museums.

  • The island was ruled by Portuguese, Dutch, English and French imperial powers in succession and thus, its architecture represents the legacy of bygone eras spanning from the 15th to the 19th centuries.

  • The Door of No Return, which Naomi Campbell visited during her recent trip to Goree Island, is a current museum and memorial that opened in the year 1962. It is located inside the Slave House which is a museum on the island. The Door of No Return was used as the final exit point for slaves from Africa during the Atlantic slave trade.

  • Gore Island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. It was declared a historical site in 1944 and protection measures were taken for it during the colonial period from 1951. It was also included in the National Heritage List in the year 1975.

  • 19th-century monuments such as Fort d'Estrees house the IFAN Historical Museum which showcases Senegal's history. The Henriette Bathily Women's Museum on an island surrounded by kilometres of Atlantic Ocean showcases the role of women in West African society of the time.

  • Gore Island now serves as a pilgrimage site for Africans and a point of contact between the Western world and Africa.

Naomi Campbell's trip to the island of Goree in Senegal was truly a glimpse into an entire universe.
