Singer Kumar Sanu remembers being asked to sing at an underworld don’s party in Dubai during a stressful period in the film industry. He said that he later became his fan.
Singer Kumar Sanu recalls being forced to sing at an underworld don’s party in Dubai, saying he was scared for his life and felt he had no option but to perform. He also said that the people who called him to sing later became his fans.
Speaking on Subhojit Ghosh’s podcast, the 68-year-old said that the underworld had direct control over the Hindi film industry at that time. According to Sanu, the atmosphere in the industry was turbulent and violent incidents were happening with people from the film industry.

During the conversation, Sanu said, “I was scared. Something was going on at that time – there was such a system.” Ghosh replied, “At that time Gulshan Kumar was shot dead.”
Recalling that period, Sanu said, “A lot of things happened in front of my eyes, so I was scared. But I tried to convince them. In return, they asked for something – come and sing here. I went and sang. I had to do that.” He said that he will try to convince such people, but in return they will ask them to perform in their programs.
Sanu then smiled and said that once they become his fans, he would tell them, “If anyone does anything to you, let us know, we will take care of it.” He said he would respond, “You don’t need to take care of me; I can take care of myself.”

Last year, Sanu had approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of her personality and publicity rights. In his petition, he sought protection over his name, voice, singing style and technique, vocal arrangement and interpretation, singing mannerisms, illustrations, caricatures, photographs, likeness and signature.
They also sought protection against unauthorized or unlicensed use and commercial exploitation by third parties that could create confusion, deception or vulnerabilities among the public. The suit, filed through lawyers Shikha Sachdeva and Sana Raees Khan, also alleges violation of Sanu’s moral rights in her performance under the Copyright Act.
