Karan Johar to distribute Ramayan in India as Dharma bags Rs 259 crore deal

Dharma Productions has acquired the Indian theatrical distribution rights of Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayan after talks with co-producers. The Rs 250 crore deal underlines the scale of the two-part epic and the industry focus around it.

Ranbir Kapoor and Yash’s ambitious two-part adaptation Ramayana has secured one of the largest distribution deals in Indian cinema. Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has reportedly acquired India theatrical distribution rights Ramayana With producers Namit Malhotra and Yash at a whopping price of Rs 250 crores.

According to a report by Variety IndiaCo-producers Namit Malhotra’s DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations finalized the deal with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions after several rounds of talks. Discussions reportedly began at around Rs 500 crore before settling on Rs 250 crore for distribution of the film across India.

The report states that Malhotra screened about 30 minutes of edited footage of the film for potential distributors before the deal was sealed.

The deal marks another major acquisition for Dharma Productions, which has delivered several high-profile pan-India blockbusters over the years, including SS Rajamouli’s. bahubali Movies of Rana Daggubati Ghazi attackShankar’s 2.0 and junior ntr Devara: Part 1. The production house got a significant financial boost in 2024 after Adar Poonawala’s Serum Institute of India acquired 50 per cent stake in the company for Rs 1,000 crore.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The cast also includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Arun Govil as Dasharatha, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Vivek Oberoi as Vidyutjiva and Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha.

The music of the film is being composed by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer.

Made on an estimated budget of around Rs 4,000 crore, Ramayana It is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. The first installment is scheduled for worldwide theatrical release during Diwali 2026, while the second part is currently in pre-production and is expected to release during Diwali 2027.

The film has generated significant buzz in the industry, with trade analysts predicting that it could become one of the biggest box-office events of Indian cinema.
