Actor-politician Kamal Haasan has supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to save energy by sharing a four-minute video online. He said national responsibility must rise above partisan politics as global tensions are causing oil prices to rise and maritime trade routes to be disrupted.

In a video posted on Friday, the actor and Rajya Sabha MP said the impact of the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran will be felt on Indian homes, farms, industries and transportation.

Haasan said this is a moment of restraint and shared responsibility. He also said that leaders should share the burden, saying that every unit of energy saved today will strengthen India tomorrow and every drop of oil saved will save the poorest Indian from inflation.

Kamal Haasan calls for restraint

In the video, Haasan said he was speaking as an Indian who was deeply concerned about the impact of the Iran war. “With oil prices rising, maritime trade routes blocked, the energy that powers our kitchens and homes, fertilizes and nourishes our fields and crops, the fuel that runs our industries and vehicles, all have become more expensive,” he said.

Pointing to the widespread international response, he said more than 60 countries had already introduced energy-saving rules. Referring to Singapore, he said, ‘We recently heard the Prime Minister of Singapore asking his people to be prepared for difficult times to come.’ He said that being a big country, India should respond seriously.

He said that in such moments there is a demand that national responsibility should rise above party politics.

Recalling the words of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he said that governments come and go, but the country remains. He then mentioned the sacrifices made by Indians in the 1960s. During the 1962 war with China, he said, families had donated gold from their homes to support the troops on the border. In 1965, when India faced food shortage, Lal Bahadur Shastri asked citizens to give up one meal a week.

He said, “Today India does not need such sacrifices. Certainly, we must do the same for our country, while our parents have done much more than this.”

The actor ends the video by saying, “Remember, every unit of energy saved today strengthens the India of tomorrow. And every drop of oil saved protects the poorest Indian from inflation. Geopolitics will affect the pedestrians on the road as much as the high-flying rich. But if we face this crisis together, India can and will emerge stronger. Jai Hind.”

his previous message

Haasan’s comments come days after he urged the film industry to cut avoidable costs. In an open letter, he pointed to growing ambient culture, unnecessary foreign travel, production delays, and poor planning as reasons for the rising expenses. He also said that any financial improvement should not be at the expense of the personnel on the sets.

After that message he liked his own journey. As soon as the shooting of its sequel resumes Kalki 2898 ADHaasan flew economy class instead of taking a chartered flight. The film’s producer, Vyjayanthi Movies, shared a photo from the flight and said the gesture came at a time when the industry was facing financial pressure.
