‘Kalki 2898 AD’ director Nag Ashwin: ‘Star Wars’ had a huge impact on me
‘Kalki 2898 AD’ director Nag Ashwin talks about his influences, comparisons with Hollywood releases and more in this exclusive chat with IndiaToday.in.

When the trailer of Kalki 2898 AD was released, the internet started comparing it to several Hollywood films like Dune, Mad Max movies, Star Wars and more. Deepika’s look in Kalki was also compared to Zendaya’s look in Dune. In a recent conversation with India Today, Kalki director Nag Ashwin shared his thoughts on these comparisons with Hollywood films.
When asked if subconsciously Dune and Star Wars influenced the making of Kalki, Ashwin said, “I’m a huge fan of Lord of the Rings. I’m also a huge fan of Star Wars and Harry Potter. I love anything that creates its own universe and its own rules. And you get invested in it because as readers, it gives you a kind of peace or a chance to escape into that world. And that’s very valuable. So, I mean, I never thought I could write something like that. But Kalki was the closest I could get to writing something that I could make into a film.”
Talking about the comparisons with Dune, Nag Ashwin said, “I hadn’t read Dune until just before the film came out, and I think it’s a beautiful work. And yes, I’m a huge Star Wars fan. So I might have made some references subconsciously. Star Wars definitely had a huge impact on me growing up.”
Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles, has received love from critics as well as the general audience. In fact, the second part of the film has already been announced.
