Japan has shown off an AI-powered human washing machine, designed to clean and dry the human body within 15 minutes. Developed by Science Company, the device named ‘Mirai Ningen Sentakuki’ promises a unique blend of hygiene and relaxation, providing a spa-like experience with advanced water jets and micro air bubbles.

According to a report by Asahi Shimbun, the system’s AI optimizes the cleaning process based on the user’s skin type and physical parameters, as well as playing calming scenes.

The machine works by placing the user in a transparent pod partially filled with hot water. The high-speed jets release microscopic bubbles that burst on contact, helping to remove dirt and impurities from the skin. The AI continuously monitors vital signs and adjusts the water temperature and pressure to ensure comfort throughout the process. It also assesses the user’s emotional state and projects soothing visuals inside the pod, aiming to provide a spa-like experience.

Although this technology may seem unique, it takes inspiration from a similar idea first introduced by Sanyo Electric in the 1970s. However, the modern version will be showcased at the 2025 Osaka Expo, where 1,000 visitors will have the chance to try it out. The Science Company has already opened reservations for this futuristic bathtub, which they plan to mass produce, and a home use version is also in the works.

AI washing machine for the human body: will it succeed?

The ‘human washing machine’ brings with it both opportunities and potential obstacles. The ability to wash and dry in 15 minutes may appeal to those who value efficiency, such as busy professionals or people with limited mobility. A good experience can be provided to users by adapting the washing process to each user’s specific skin type and physical condition.

However, such high-tech devices usually come with a hefty price tag, which may limit their appeal to affluent customers or niche markets. Many people enjoy the personal touch of traditional bathing, and some may find it difficult to trust a fully automatic machine for something as personal as bathing. AI-based technology can sometimes struggle with accuracy. Errors in measuring the user’s physical and emotional state may cause discomfort or dissatisfaction. It will be interesting to see how it will be used in the real world.
