After causing uproar with his disrespectful remarks and laughs after the murder of an Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula , a Seattle police officer was dismissed.

On January 23, Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, was crossing a roadway when she was hit by a police car driven by Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave. Dave was en route to a report of a drug overdose call when he reached 74 mph (more than 119 km/h). The police patrol car hit Kandula, who was flung 100 feet in the air.

Officer Daniel Auderer joked about the fatal collision and said, “I think she went up on the hood, hit the windshield, and then when he hit the brakes, flew off the car,” in bodycam footage made public by the Seattle Police Department. However, she has passed away. Auderer “laughed hard for four seconds” following these remarks, according to the Disciplinary Action Report.

In an internal email, Seattle Police Department Interim Chief Sue Rahr stated that the harm Auderer’s remarks have caused to Kandula’s family “cannot be erased.” The Seattle Police Department and our profession as a whole have been embarrassed by the acts of one police officer, which has made it harder for all police officers to do their jobs.

Rahr asserted that maintaining the high standards necessary to maintain the public’s trust is her duty as the organization’s CEO. “It would further dishonor the entire department if I allowed the officer to stay on our force,” said the writer. She said, “I’m going to fire him because of it,” in the private email that PTI had access to.
