Is your decaf coffee really caffeine-free? A nutritionist reveals the truth

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to coffee – a cup of cappuccino, latte or espresso. However, some people love coffee but want to avoid caffeine. For them, decaffeinated coffee has emerged as a popular option. Most of the caffeine in this coffee is removed through a special process. But does this mean that it is completely caffeine-free? Can you drink it without worrying that you are consuming caffeine? Recently, nutritionist Amita Gadre took to her official Instagram handle to spill the beans on this and tell the truth.

What the nutritionist revealed:

Contrary to popular belief, decaf coffee is not completely caffeine-free. Amita says, “Even though this coffee is labelled ‘decaf’, it still contains a small amount of caffeine. If regular coffee contains 100 units of caffeine, decaf coffee contains 30 units. This means it contains 33% of the caffeine compared to regular coffee. So, it is important to be mindful of the amount of caffeine you are consuming. Don’t blindly assume that it is decaf just because it is labelled as such.

What is the ideal time to drink decaf coffee?

Yes, the time you drink decaf makes a big difference. The nutritionist says you should drink decaf before 4 pm. Doing so will keep your energy levels balanced throughout the day. She further explains that 33% of caffeine can stay in your system for eight or more hours. To enjoy decaf without any impact on your health, she recommends never drinking it after 8 pm.

Should you choose decaf coffee or regular coffee?

So, now the question is: should you consider decaf as an alternative to regular coffee? The answer is yes! As mentioned above, decaf coffee contains less caffeine than regular coffee, making it a great option for people who want to reduce their caffeine intake. However, drink it in moderation as it still contains some caffeine. When consumed in moderation and at the right time, you can reap its amazing benefits. So, go ahead and drink your decaf, but be careful about it.
