For most of us, silence can feel strange, almost like a void that we are eager to fill. But a new TikTok trend is turning that idea on its head, encouraging people to do the exact opposite — to embrace peace.

The #SilentWalking trend is gaining momentum as users share their experiences of taking a walk without any digital distractions, and it’s more than just a challenge. It is fast becoming a mental health practice that promises to bring peace, clarity and a much-needed break from the noise of everyday life and also helps reduce anxiety.

What is silent walking?

Silent walking is as simple as it sounds – taking a stroll without any digital distractions. No music, no podcasts, no calls. It’s just you, your thoughts and your surroundings.

Sheena Sood, psychologist and consultant, PD Hinduja Hospital and MRC, Mahim, Mumbai, says, “In today’s day and age, the biggest distraction is our phone, so keep it and any distractions away. Keep it and just go for a walk alone. This is called silent walking. It is great for our mental health because it involves a large amount of conscious self-reflection beyond the virtual and distraction-filled world. It’s a great form of physical and mental activity.”

Roshni Sondhi Abbi, clinical psychologist, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, says, “Incorporating mindfulness, silent walking encourages us to focus on the present moment, providing a break from constant distractions. How did this concept go viral?

The silent walking trend started last year when TikTok creator Maddy Mao shared her experience following her nutritionist’s advice: Instead of engaging in intense cardio workouts, she was encouraged to take a simple 30-minute walk every day. . Adding to this, her boyfriend suggested she try walking with no distractions — no podcasts, no music, just silence.

This led to a flood of social media posts, with countless people sharing their experiences of the silent walk.

While Mao’s videos played a significant role in the trend’s recent surge, the practice of walking without digital distractions is not a new concept.

Milind Soman, known for his washboard abs and fitness regime, has often mentioned that he likes to leave his earphones behind when it comes to walking or running. Not only does he avoid distractions, but he also runs mostly barefoot.

How walking in silence can benefit your mental health

Dr Nikhil Nair, psychiatrist at Sharda Hospital, Delhi, says that walking quietly encourages awareness, which makes people more aware of their surroundings and body. This can result in a better feeling of emotional balance and inner peace. It also provides an opportunity for reflection and promotes mental health. Dr. Nair says that walking quietly can also:

Encourage mindfulness: Silent Walking turns an everyday activity, walking, into a mindfulness practice. Without music or conversation to distract you, you start paying attention to things around you – the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, even the rhythm of your steps. It’s an opportunity to be present in the moment, which can help reduce stress and anxiety.

Promote self-reflection: For many people, quiet moments are when they are most reflective. Running without any audio input can help clear up mental clutter, giving you a chance to process your thoughts, emotions, and even come up with creative ideas. It’s almost like giving your brain a moment to breathe.

Break the cycle of constant stimulation: We live in a world of instant gratification, where there is always something new vying for our attention. Silent walking helps interrupt this cycle of overstimulation, allowing the brain to rest and reset. Research has shown that taking a break from digital devices can improve concentration and cognitive function.

Boost mood: Walking is thought to release endorphins – “feel good” hormones. Combine this with the calming effect of silence, and you have a simple but powerful mood booster. Many TikTok users have reported feeling more at ease and focused after silent walks, calling it a form of therapy.

Improve sleep quality: Silent walking, especially if done in the evening, can help signal to your body that it is time to rest, making it easier to fall asleep.

It may seem like walking quietly is no big deal and anyone can do it, but truth be told, it is easier said than done as it will require a lot of caution as well as patience.

To get started, experts recommend keeping things simple:

start small: Start with a 10-minute walk in your neighborhood. As you become comfortable, you can increase the duration.

choose the comfortable path: Choose a familiar route so you don’t have to think too much about where you’re going. This will relax you and help you focus on the experience.

lleave your phone at home: If this seems too hard, take your phone with you, but keep it on silent. Resist the urge to check it until your work is complete.

Silent walking may have become the talk of the town thanks to its popularity on TikTok, but the art of taking a morning or evening walk without any distractions has always been the norm (ask your grandparents). So, this is not a fad.
