The US Presidential Election 2024 is a battle of the sexes.
Historically speaking, women have been more inclined to vote for Democrats than men since the 1980s, and the gap has widened.
This time, Democrats are losing support from key demographics like black and Latino men. However, he has gained support in another constituency – among women voters.
According to the Center for American Women and Politics, “the number of female voters has exceeded the number of male voters in every presidential election since 1964”, so turnout is important to both parties.
Apart from key issues like the economy and employment, two important topics that will heavily influence the election results are abortion and immigration, with Democrat Kamala Harris gaining the lead with the former and Republican Donald Trump with the latter.
Based on an analysis by Gallup, “women aged 18 to 29 today are more liberal than young women of the past on specific issues, particularly the environment and abortion” which explains the increase in female voters for the Democratic Party. .
Trump has struggled to connect with female voters. In fact, women are favoring Harris over Trump by a considerable margin. This trend is consistent with past elections, where Trump has failed to win over female voters. In 2020, Joe Biden took a larger share of female voters, at 55%, while Trump won only 44%. Similarly, in 2016, Hillary Clinton claimed 54% of women voters while Trump won 39%.
Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist, posted, “There have been a disproportionate number of women voting early. If men stay home, Kamala is president. It’s that simple. If you want a vision of the future if you don’t vote, So imagine Kamala’s raspy voice, forever. Men need to go and vote now” urging men to cast their vote.
Women have utmost importance in this election because they can make or break the election. “The women’s vote will be decisive in this election,” said Katherine Tate, a political scientist at Brown University. “If Harris wins, it will be because women elected her.” She also said, “Trump has alienated women voters with his foul language and aggression.”
On that note, Trump sounded nervous, saying, “You will no longer have to worry about all the problems our country faces. You will be safe, and I will be your savior. Women will be happy, healthy, confident, and free. You will no longer have access to abortion.” Won’t think about it.” At a campaign rally in Indiana, he was calling himself a liberator and messiah for women. It had a protectionist tone that took away agency from women’s voices and set America back several years.
However, according to a CNN report, Trump has been asking his close aides why women don’t like him. The gender gap is a serious concern for the Trump campaign. Speaking for the Republican nominee, campaign spokeswoman Caroline Levitt told The Independent, that he is “liked by millions of women across the country, and people who know him personally, including myself, will tell you that He is helpful, generous and kind.”
It is also notable that at least 27 women have accused Trump of sexual harassment and misconduct since the 1970s, all of which have been denied by the former president.
