Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam remain friends for more than three decades instead of colleagues. Interestingly, they have cooperated simultaneously on only two projects, with first heroans and then with thugs life.
His second project took place only after a gap of about 38 years. However, despite the differences, the audience realized that both films have maintained some common symptoms and shared more than one of equality.
Well, then, see these five similarities that are drawn between the naikan and the thug life.
The theme of gangster thriller
One of the most obvious similarities between naikan and thug life is his theme and a background of a gangster action thriller.
The former used to revolve around the development of an underworld kingpin as he woke up from being a slum for a respected crime owner in Udham city of Bombay.
In the thug life, a uniform feature can be found, as it narrates the story of a mafia and his journey from Delhi, where he wants vengeance against people belonging to his own.
Heroes
It seems that Mani Ratnam has tried to maintain a continuity of continuity between two films by giving the same name to the title characters played by Kamal Haasan.
For Naikan, the Tamil actor adopted the name Sakthivedel Naicker, also known by many surnames.
When it comes to this thug life, Kamal Haasan’s character clings to the name of Sakathivale and becomes colorful.
Criticism of complex family relations
Another common feature between two Tamil films is a underlying comment on complex family ties and unresolved issues in both films.
In Naikan, the hero is looking at his father’s abandonment and feeling betrayed after his father’s death.
On the other hand, the audience saw a game of revenge between Sakathivale and his foster son Amarran in the thug life, later planned to kill him and hird his position in the underworld.
Tassel between good and evil
Both Mani Ratnam movies leave the audience on a difficult path, as they should underestimate what is really good and what is naturally worse.
In two films played by Kamal Haasan, the title characters became extremely corrupt due to his connection to the gangster world. However, their hard exterior is a soft core of a painful past, which is often ignored.
As a result, it is quite difficult to classify them as good or bad, or whether the character is just morally faulty.
Reference to previous trauma
References to Nayak’s previous trauma are another recurrent theme in both films. The mafia being an ordinary person for the king of the world is not an easy task.
While one faces disintegration and contingent from any ancestral figure, the other is suffering from backstabing hypocrisy, which shakes his belief to do whatever good.
