Why does this happen

“Strawberry legs, also known as keratosis pilaris, is a common skin disease caused by clogged hair follicles on the legs. It is a hereditary disease and causes small red acne-like lesions on the legs, arms, shoulders, and upper back,” explains Dr Praveen Bharadwaj, Consultant, Dermatology, Manipal Hospitals, Bengaluru. india today,

Doctors say that this condition develops when hair follicles become blocked by excess amounts of a protein called keratin. This results in hair follicles becoming blocked and developing knots.

Furthermore, Dr. Rishabh Raj Sharma, a dermatologist at Noida International Institute of Medical Sciences (NIIMS), explains, “There can be several reasons for this to happen. Shaving sometimes causes irritation and ingrown hairs, leading to clogged pores and the appearance of blackheads. Also, conditions such as excessive sebum production and folliculitis, which is inflammation of hair follicles due to infection, can contribute to the development of strawberry legs.”

quite common

“Strawberry legs are relatively common and can affect anyone, but they are more commonly seen in individuals with dark hair and fair skin, where dark spots are more noticeable due to the contrast,” says Dr Akanksha Singh Cornit, Bengaluru-based aesthetic therapist and founder of Promed Aesthetics.

The doctor said that it is not a medical but a cosmetic problem, and with proper skin care the problem of strawberry legs can be reduced to a great extent.

Popularity of Glycolic Acid on Social Media

The most common method you’ll see on the web for getting rid of strawberry legs is using glycolic acid on the affected area.

Dr. Akanksha Singh Cornit says, “Many hacks on social media, such as using glycolic acid to reverse strawberry legs, are based on some degree of scientific reasoning. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that acts as an exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and improve skin texture.”

  • Glycolic acid helps to exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells, and unclog clogged pores.
  • It promotes cell renewal, thereby improving the overall appearance of the skin and reducing the visibility of dark spots.

He added that you can also try other common remedies such as mechanical exfoliation and salicylic acid.

Meanwhile, Dr Praveen Bhardwaj says, “Strawberry legs can only be reduced, not cured, as it is an ongoing process. Application of glycolic acid improves the condition by helping to unclog hair pores.”

“Its use is not curative, but one of the ways to maintain the condition. Since it also lightens the skin, it gives the legs an even and smooth appearance. Not everyone can tolerate glycolic acid as it can cause irritation, so it should be used only after consulting a specialist,” the doctor further explains.

More ways to deal with strawberry legs

Proper shaving technique

  • Shave in the direction of hair growth: This reduces irritation and ingrown hairs, which can be responsible for strawberry legs.
  • Use a sharp razor: A dull razor can pull at the skin and cause irritation. Change your razor blade frequently or use a disposable one.
  • Moisturize before shaving: Shaving cream or gel helps the razor glide smoothly and reduces friction.
  • Avoid sharp strokes: Shave with gentle, short strokes to minimize irritation.

Regular exfoliation

  • Exfoliate 2-3 times a week: This removes dead skin cells that clog pores and trap hair, causing pimples.
  • Use a gentle exfoliant: Use a loofah, washcloth, or scrub with soft particles to avoid scratching the skin.
  • Dry brushing may also be helpful: Brush your feet in a circular motion before bathing to loosen dead skin.

damp

  • Moisturize daily: This keeps your skin hydrated and prevents dryness, which can worsen the appearance of strawberry legs.
  • Use a fragrance-free lotion: Fragrances can irritate some skin types.
  • Apply moisturizer after shaving and bathing: This helps soothe the skin and retain moisture.

Alternative hair removal methods

  • Consider waxing or laser hair removal: These methods remove hair from the root, which reduces the frequency of shaving and may reduce the appearance of strawberry legs. However, these options can be expensive and waxing can be painful.

post hair removal care

  • Soothe the skin after hair removal: Apply a soothing lotion or aloe vera gel to the skin to reduce irritation.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes: Tight clothes can trap sweat and irritate the skin. Wear loose-fitting pants or skirts after shaving or hair removal.

Gentle skin care

  • Avoid harsh soaps and detergents: These can strip your skin of natural oils and increase dryness.
  • Take a warm shower. Remember that hot water can dry out your skin.

Sun protection

  • Exposure to the sun can darken the color of strawberry feet. Always use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on your feet when you go out.

Proper Hygiene

  • Keep your razor clean: Wash the razor after each stroke and store it in a dry place to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Exfoliate your razor: Occasionally clean your razor with rubbing alcohol to remove built-up hair and skin cells.

Stability

  • Be consistent with your routine as following these steps regularly will help prevent the development of strawberry legs and keep your skin smooth.

Memorization…

Dr. Rishabh Raj Sharma says, “It can be challenging to deal with the issues associated with strawberry legs, but it is important to remember that beauty comes in different forms, and true beauty lies in self-acceptance and confidence. Embrace your uniqueness and practice positive self-talk, which will help contribute to a healthy body image and overall well-being.”

He adds, “Support from family, friends and mental health professionals can give you a safe place to express your feelings, and provide guidance on how to improve self-esteem and body image.”

Meanwhile, Dr Praveen Bhardwaj points out that patient education and social awareness by doctors and social media can really help in understanding the condition and dealing with any myths and taboos associated with it.
