Chris Pine has expressed uncertainty about his involvement in The Princess Diaries 3. However, he was happy to know about the official announcement of the sequel.
Pine, who played Nicholas Deveraux in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, addressed the topic during a recent appearance on the Today Show with Hoda & Jenna on October 8.
When asked if he would share the screen with Anne Hathaway in the upcoming film, Pine admitted that he was not in talks about anything related to the project. He is unsure about his return to Genovia.
The hosts pressed Pine’s active involvement in the franchise, but the actor jokingly told them that they should contact Disney or Bob Iger to get such answers. He said, “The answer is, honestly, I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”
Yet, on the other hand, Pine expressed his eagerness in producing the film, as he said he believed it would be great.
Anne Hathaway will return to the franchise as Mia Thermopolis in the third film. The revival comes 20 years after the last installment, The Princess Diaries 2. The follow-up film will be directed by Crazy Rich Asians director Adele Lim, who is a big fan of both films.
Lim could not hide her happiness on joining this project. She said that this franchise needs to promote concepts like women empowerment, happiness and mentorship, which are important elements in the franchise.
Hathaway further stated how happy she was that Lim would direct the third Princess Diaries film. Last year, some fans were eager to hear about confirmation of a sequel. Anne told fans that they will have to wait a bit as everything takes time.
Meanwhile, it is still unknown whether Julie Andrews will return in The Princess Diaries 3 or not. Andrews was perfect as Queen Clarice Renaldi in the first two films.
The Princess Diaries is a film franchise of cult classic films targeting young adult audiences that began in 2001, inspired by the book series Meg Cabot. The plot focuses on Mia Thermopolis, a simple teenage girl who hails from San Francisco and discovers that she is the daughter of the king of a fictional country.
Throughout the film series, Mia effectively manages the evolving dimensions of royalty, relationships, and life together under the watchful eye of her grandmother Queen Clarice Renaldi, played by Julie Andrews.
The first film, The Princess Diaries, follows Mia’s journey from an ordinary girl to a princess and the major changes in her life. The second film, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, focuses on the next stage, where the heroine is a princess and is now preparing to become the soon-to-be queen.
Both The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement are available to stream on Disney+.
