Electronics prices, including smartphones and laptops such as Apple iPhones and Macbooks, may see rising as the US government’s mutual tariffs are scheduled to come under the impact starting from April 2. Tariffs declared by US President Donald Trump are part of a comprehensive plan to import on high taxes on American goods. Addressing a joint session of the US Congress, Donald Trump said the tariffs imposed by many countries including India are “unfair”.
He especially highlighted India’s “more than 100 percent” tariffs on motor vehicle imports from the US. Trump said, “On April 2, kick in mutual tariffs. Whatever they are doing, we will tax them.”
Even though the electronic goods were not specifically mentioned during Trump’s address to the US Congress, but according to a report by Mint, new tariffs can affect a wide range of products including electronics. India has become a major manufacturing center for brands such as Apple, which has been steadily increasing the local production of iPhones and other equipment in recent years.
Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in India since 2017, but limited models and usually the base variants were created in India. However, over the years, Apple is expanding the range of models here that make here. And starts with the latest iPhone 16 series, apple for the first time, now makes 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models in India. In fact, for the iPhone 16E, Apple said that it will only collect the device in India for the local market, but also for exports.
However, due to the new American tariffs, tax liabilities on imported electronic goods from India may probably increase, which will probably increase the overall cost for companies that rely on the country’s manufacturing ecosystem. Which means, if heavy taxes are levied, brands will be forced to increase prices to maintain profit margin. This can lead to high prices for their products not only in India but also abroad.
The announcement of mutual tariff falls on the heels of another report, claiming that Apple is facing 10 percent tariffs on products imported from China in the US. This will increase prices for iPhones, iPads and MacBook in the US.
Trump’s mutual tariff announced the new 25 percent tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports came a day after the tariff. On the other hand, for China, the tariffs doubled 20 percent.
