Instagram may be working on a new feature that allows users to generate AI-powered likeness avatars of themselves where they may also be able to swap their face with someone else’s.

Instagram may soon introduce a new feature that will allow users to create their own “likeness” using AI. You can think of a likeness as an embodiment. While avatars already exist on the platform, likenesses can be built upon them to expand into more extensive photo and video editing. Additionally, it appears that users may also be able to swap their likeness with others, possibly close friends and acquaintances, with permission.

The feature was reported by tipster Alessandro Paluzzi, who goes by the handle @alex193a on X (formerly Twitter), along with screenshots showing how some parts of it might work in the future. However, it is important to understand that Instagram has not yet confirmed this update, so it would be better if you take this information with a grain of salt.

Instagram creates your likeness with face swap feature: details leaked

According to Paluzzi, who is also a reverse engineer, Instagram is working on a feature that will let users create AI-likenesses and even replace their avatars with the likeness of other people in photos and videos. If you want to change your likeness, you’ll need permission, the tipster adds. When you request access, that person will be notified and when they approve, you can use their likeness in your photos and videos.

This consensus-based approach could be inspired by OpenAI’s Sora which already has an approval-based system for using other people’s likenesses. This is so the platform can keep an eye on potential abuse.

Meta had hinted last month that it may be working on subscription plans for all its popular apps, including WhatsApp and Instagram. It remains to be seen whether the likeness creation and face swap will be paid for.

This wouldn’t be Meta’s first time with a parity build. The company has had features in the past that let users interact with chatbots in Meta AI that were designed for popular celebrities. However following backlash, it was forced to withdraw this functionality.
