Insta360 files counter-suit against DJI in the US for infringing its patents related to gimbal and 360° camera technology

Camera company Insta360 launched Luna Ultra three days ago. The same day, DJI sued Insta360 in the US over how similar the Luna Ultra is to its upcoming Osmo Pocket 4P. Now, Insta360 has filed two counterclaims against DJI in the US, claiming that DJI infringed its patents related to the gimbal and 360° camera technology.

Insta360 says the patents infringed by DJI relate to gimbal stabilization, gimbal directional control, camera smooth stabilization, telemetry overlay, and panoramic video stabilization technology, all of which are included in multiple DJI products including the Osmo Pocket series, Ronin/RS series, Osmo Mobile series, and the Osmo 360.

Additionally, Insta360 said that these countersuits are a direct response to the patent lawsuits filed by DJI on June 10, the day it launched Luna Ultra. DJI has filed two lawsuits against Insta360 and is seeking a permanent injunction to ban Luna Ultra in the US.

At Insta360, we love to let our products shine. But we are not afraid of a legal fight when challenged. We are fully committed to protecting our innovations and will take decisive action to protect our intellectual property from infringement.said JK Liu, Founder of Insta360.

Insta360 also categorically rejected DJI’s infringement claims regarding Luna Ultra.

Luna Ultra is the result of years of independent R&D, not a response to a competitor’s product. Development began in 2020, with the first Insta360 products including the One R, Link Series webcams and Flow Series gimbals helping to shape the technology and design direction behind Luna Ultra. DJI filed a lawsuit the same day we launched the Luna Ultra Speaks – highlighting their fear of competition from a highly competitive product,Liu said.

The Luna Ultra costs about $770, and Insta360 said it saw “significant demand” in North America and was ranked as a top seller in Amazon’s Camcorder category in the US during its first 24 hours of availability.
