A 33-year-old Indian-origin man in New York shot dead his younger brother and injured his mother before committing suicide, reportedly due to family tensions over financial issues.

Karamjit Multani, 33, shot his brother Vipanpal Multani, 27,He was attacked nine times at his home in Richmond Hill on Saturday night. His mother was also shot in the stomach while trying to protect Vipanpal, but she survived.

According to the New York Post, after shooting his brother and mother, Karamjit ran into the street, took off his turban and shot himself in the head.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) revealed that Karamjeet had left a detailed, lengthy text message for his wife, in which he expressed his grievances against his family.

Karamjeet felt ridiculed over his financial struggles and the failure of his grocery store in Indiana, in contrast to Vipnpal’s successful deli (a grocery store). There is a grocery store (a store selling ready-to-eat products) business in Valley Stream.

“There were some indications that he had made his son a sheikh [religious title] NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney said the only person who can do this is the eldest male in the family, who is the father, reports the New York Post.

“But they were fighting about this and fighting about financial problems and fighting about the privilege that their brother was getting because he was more successful,” Kenny said.

The Multani brothers’ father gifted money and property to both his sons to start their own businesses. Vipanpal’s deli shop thrived, but Karamjit’s grocery store shut down, leading to tensions.

On the night of the shooting, upset by his father’s demands to leave the house, elder brother Karamjeet sent his wife and three children back to Indiana.

While the family was having a meal, an argument broke out between them, causing them to go their separate ways.

At around 10:30 pm, Karamjit barged into Vipanpal’s room and shot him without warning. His father, Bhupinder Multani, managed to escape and sought help from a neighbor who called 911.

The neighbour saw Vipanpal with nine bullet wounds and called for help.

“He told me, ‘Please, don’t let me die.’ He later died in my arms,” the neighbor said, CBS News reported.

Neighbours described Karamjit as a “nice, quiet boy” who showed no signs of aggression.

Family friend Mandeep told the New York Post that the murder-suicide happened “out of the blue.”

Earlier, Karamjit’s father told CBS News, “There were no major problems. There were just minor disagreements [between his sons]No big deal.”
