Can a shot of olive oil stop hangover?
The legend behind consuming olive oil before drinking is stems from the fact that high -fat materials form a protective layer in the stomach, which in turn, slows down the absorption of alcohol in the bloodstream and reduces the possibility of hangover. According to a research paper published in 2005 in BMJ magazines, fatty foods may delay some extent of absorption of alcohol, but its effectiveness is still suspicious.
Why?
Because your stomach is not absorbing all the alcohol that you are consuming. According to an article published by the official website of California Department of Drug Control, about 20 percent is absorbed into the small intestine, where absorption is faster. This means that even though olive oil shot slows down the initial absorption in the abdomen, most of the alcohol will still be absorbed in the digestive process later. In addition, after being absorbed by the small intestine, according to research published in alcohol research and health, alcohol is processed and metabolized in the liver. It leads to the primary causes of hangover such as dehydration, headache and nausea. Olive oil has no part in this metabolic process that will reduce or replace the hangover results.
