In a bizarre incident in Japan, a man was arrested for making more than 100 silent phone calls to his wife every day for several weeks. The disturbing incident happened between July and August, with the husband’s strange behavior drawing public attention. According to police South China Morning PostThe 31-year-old woman from Hyogo Prefecture told police that she received harassing blank calls every day in July and August. However, upon answering, the caller remained silent. Initially, she voiced her concerns to her husband, but his indifference and lack of concern frustrated her.

A turning point came when she noticed that the calls would stop when her husband was sleeping, playing games or spending time with her. Her suspicions grew, and she devised a test. While shopping together, she closely observed his movements, she noticed that he did not touch his phone, and then the calls would stop.

She then reported her concerns to the police, who checked the couple’s phone records. Investigations revealed that the husband was actually the mastermind behind the mysterious silent calls that were bothering his wife. Further investigations revealed that he was using private numbers to hide his identity.

The couple had no known relationship issues and were living in an amicable manner. According to reports, his intentions stemmed from jealousy and possessiveness. A particular incident in the past filled him with insecurity when he found his wife chatting with another man. Feeling threatened, he started making calls silently as a punishment. However, he also claimed that he “loved her very much.”

In Japan, it is considered a criminal offense to emotionally harass someone through a phone call. Violators can face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 1 million yen (US$7,000), and a restraining order will also be issued.

Authorities took the husband into custody on September 4. Although his sentencing is still pending, the incident has sparked national debate in Japan, with many calling for greater awareness and action against emotional abuse and domestic abuse.

One user wrote, “The husband has too much control over his wife. This kind of love is suffocating.”

Another commented, “The best way for a couple to resolve issues is through communication, not harassment or violence.”
