Illegal Voting in America: Africa, India and China: Foreign citizens from several countries have been accused of voting illegally in the US for years

Authorities in the United States say several non-citizens from countries including Mauritania, India and China have been charged with voting illegally in US elections. One of the most recent cases involves Mahdi Sacco, a 50-year-old Mauritanian national living in Philadelphia, who investigators say had been flagged for deportation since 2002. Sacco, who reportedly used the alias “Sacco Scorpion”, was arrested last week in a joint operation between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the FBI. Authorities allege he falsely claimed to be a US citizen in order to register and vote in the 2024 election.According to investigators, Sacco had voted in several elections since 2008 and was registered as a Democrat. Authorities say he “falsely represented that he was a U.S. citizen” in order to vote in the recent presidential election and register to vote, the New York Post reports.Sacco dismissed the allegations when contacted by the New York Post. “Everything is a lie! They’re lying about me!” He said before ending the call. He has not filed any petition yet.The case comes as lawmakers in Washington debate the Save America Act, a Republican-backed bill that would require proof of citizenship such as a passport or birth certificate when registering to vote in federal elections.Several other cases have been reported in recent months. In Pennsylvania, Indian national Kaushalkumar Patel, 47, of Allentown, is to be prosecuted for allegedly voting in the 2020 election. His lawyer has said that Patel has lived in the United States for two decades and is awaiting details of the government’s case.In another incident, Haoxiang Gao, a 19-year-old Chinese national and University of Michigan student, was accused of voting illegally in the 2024 election. Authorities say Gao fled China before facing trial, and left the United States using a different passport after surrendering his original passport in court. The investigation also revealed cases involving non-citizens of Canada, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Ukraine, and Iraq who allegedly voted despite not having U.S. citizenship.
