Irish musician Hozier, also known as Andrew Hozier-Byrne, shared a memorable trip that inspired a few lines from his song Too Sweet during his Unreal Unearth tour.
During a performance at Minnesota’s Xcel Energy Center on August 18, Hozier recalled, via a fan’s TikTok post, a particularly chaotic evening before an important early morning flight. He revealed that he had been drinking heavily with an old friend the previous night. When morning came, he was not at all prepared for his flight. His friend woke him up abruptly, and Hozier, still groggy and in bad shape, struggled to get dressed. In his disoriented state, he joked about his height, claiming that if he fell, he would be “halfway home.”
In his haste, Hozier made several funny mistakes. After hitting the window, he bumped into the wall while trying to regain balance. Despite these ridiculous setbacks, he managed to pack his bags and reach the airport on time.
Mixing chaos and humor, the comedic tale highlighted a difficult yet memorable moment in his journey and gave fans a unique glimpse into his experiences.
Hozier spoke about a memorable flight experience that included an unexpected meeting with Irish actor Cillian Murphy. He said he felt “nervous” and compared the feeling to a severe hangover, causing him to shake involuntarily.
When he looked to his left on the plane, he was surprised to see Murphy sitting next to him. Hozier admitted that his feelings of confusion and shock were compounded by the sight of the famous actor, whom he greatly admired.
During the flight, Hozier noticed he was scratching his head and felt something wet, but later realized he was bleeding a little. Startled and confused, he was even more surprised when Murphy leaned over and asked, “How are you doing?”
Hozier revealed that this chaotic trip, which included his falling out and an unexpected encounter with Murphy, inspired the lyrics to his song “Too Sweet”. The line “I aim low, I aim true, and the ground is where I land” was influenced by this ordeal.
Though he never got a chance to explain his situation to Murphy, Hozier smiled recalling the incident during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in March 2023.
Hozier has expressed his deep appreciation for performing and connecting with audiences who appreciate his music. He finds it both remarkable and humbling that people choose to spend their own money to attend his concerts, considering it a great honor. This gratitude to his audience remains central to his performance experience.
Hozier also spoke about the dangers of pushing yourself for fame, warning against trying to gain recognition simply for the sake of being famous. He believes this can have harmful consequences and instead stressed the importance of focusing on the joy and impact of your work.
Despite his success, Hozier values his privacy and lives a quiet lifestyle. He finds satisfaction in simple pleasures, such as eating out or walking the streets unnoticed. His primary goal is for his music to be appreciated by others, and he finds satisfaction in living a quiet life.
