In short

  • IIT Bombay researchers studied the period of focus in women with PCOS
  • PCOS women showed slow response time in focused works
  • PCOS was better to perform focus between participants

In a recent study, IIT Bombay researchers investigated how polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a normal hormonal state, can not only affect the body, but also affect the mind, especially attention periods.

PCOS is widely known to cause problems such as irregular periods, acne, weight gain and reproductive issues in women. More than 11% of Indian women are expected to suffer from this endocrinal dysfunction.

While many research has detected its physical and hormonal effects, less studies have seen how it can affect brain functions such as attention. This new study is the first to test how PCOS can affect a woman’s ability to focus and focus.

All about studies

Research published at the Peer-Revered Journal BMC included 173 women, including 101 women, including PCOS and 72 women. Scientists used two specific tests to measure a variety of attention:

  • ConcentrateWhich has the ability to focus on one thing, ignoring distractions.
  • Divided meditationWhich has the ability to pay attention to many things simultaneously.

Participants were given simple computer-based tasks, designed to measure how quickly and accurately responded to some signs.

What did the researchers find

The study showed that women with PCOS were slow in tasks that were focused on. On average, their response time was 557 milliseconds, in split focus functions slowed about 100 milliseconds compared to their performance. When he asked to focus on the same work, he made some more mistakes.

In contrast, their performance in divided meditation functions, which required multitasking, were relatively better in both speed and accuracy.

In simple terms, this means that women with PCOS can be more difficult to focus on a task at a time than women without the situation.

Although the differences were not harsh, they were sufficient to suggest that PCOS could have a subtle effect of how the brain focuses.

Meditation is an important part of our daily life, it helps us to work, learn and interact with others. If PCOS affects attention, even slightly, it can affect how women with the situation do tasks that require focus, such as studying, driving, or working in distraught environment.

This study adds a new layer how we understand PCOS. This indicates that the condition may not only be about hormones or physical health, it can also affect cognitive functions such as attention.

However, more research is required to understand why this happens and whether treatment for PCOS can also improve attention issues.
