Netflix changes opening disclaimer of ‘IC 814′ amid controversy over hijackers’ names
Netflix’s content vice president Monika Shergill on Tuesday issued a statement amid the ongoing controversy over the web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’. She said that the makers have officially included the real names of the terrorists in the show as a disclaimer.
Their full statement read, “For the benefit of viewers unfamiliar with the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814, the initial disclaimer has been updated to include the real and code names of the hijackers. The code names in the series reflect the names used during the actual incident.”
Shergill, on behalf of Netflix, said that the platform is fully dedicated to representing authenticity in its stories. He said, “India has a rich culture of storytelling and we are committed to showcasing these stories and their authentic representation.” This statement comes hours after a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in which they clarified their stand on the entire issue.
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, ‘IC 814’ is a dramatic story of the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in 1999. Five terrorists hijacked the Delhi-bound flight from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal. The crisis lasted for seven days before the then BJP-led government finally gave in to the demands and released three high-profile terrorists.
