When news broke that Lee Hesheng would leave Enhypen to pursue solo music, fans’ reaction was naturally overwhelming. Within days, over one million people signed an online petition, urging the agency to reconsider the decision and allow him to release solo works without leaving the group. Protest trucks have also been sent to register their anger and outrage over this decision.

Amid the growing backlash, Baylift Labs has reaffirmed that the decision will not be reversed. “Heesung will not return to Enhypen,” Belift Lab told The Korea Herald. “He has a clear artistic direction he wants to pursue and we decided to respect that.” This confirmation comes as fans, especially international supporters, have been running a massive campaign urging the company to reconsider the move.

For many, Hyesung’s departure has reopened a familiar question about the idol system: Can K-pop really accommodate individual artistic growth within its tightly structured group model?

Creation of K-pop “Ace”

Born in 2001, Heseung first came into the public eye through the survival show I-Land, which was created to launch a new boy group under the HYBE-backed label, Baylift Lab. Hesheng finished fifth in the final global vote and debuted with ENHYPEN later that year.

Within the group, he soon developed a reputation as an “ace” – a K-pop term reserved for idols who excel in all disciplines. Despite being widely recognized as the group’s lead vocalist, he was also equally visible as a dancer and performer, often taking center stage during live stages. Over time, his role expanded beyond performance. Heeseung gradually moved into songwriting and production and co-produced the fan-dedicated track Highway 1009 in 2024.

Meanwhile, Enhypen’s rise was rapid. Formed through I-Land and debuting in November 2020, the group quickly became one of the most visible fourth-generation boy bands globally, selling millions of albums and touring internationally in just a few years.

That’s why Hseung’s exit seems so shocking: He wasn’t just another member — he was one of the group’s creative and performance anchors.

A group that never really slowed down

Part of the conversation surrounding Hesheng’s departure also relates to the pace at which Enhypen is operating.

Since their debut in 2020, the group has maintained an unusually rapid release cycle. In just five years, they have released multiple studio albums and EPs, including projects like Dark Blood and Orange Blood in 2023, Romance: Untold in 2024, Desire: Unleashed in 2025, and the EP The Sin: Vanish in early 2026.

In total, ENHYPEN has released three full-length albums and seven EPs over approximately five years, along with singles, soundtrack contributions and collaborations. The group’s touring schedule has been equally demanding. Since debut, ENHYPEN has embarked on several major world tours and global fan meetings, performing in Asia, North America, and Europe.

Over the years it became clear that the album cycle, rehearsals, promotion and touring often ran back-to-back, leaving very little time to be seen. Among fans, ENHYPEN is sometimes described as one of the most accomplished fourth-generation groups. That context adds another layer to the conversation surrounding Hsieng’s decision.

The decision that sparked fan revolt

On March 10, 2026, BELIFT LAB confirmed that Heeseung would be leaving ENHYPEN while remaining signed to the company as a solo artist. The group would continue as six members.

Almost immediately, fans began asking the same question: Why did he have to leave the group to go solo?

In Western pop music, artists often combine both identities. Band members frequently release solo albums while continuing to perform with their groups. But K-pop has historically worked differently.

The petition that has surpassed one million signatures argues exactly this point – that an idol should be able to pursue individual artistry without breaking ties with the group that has built their career.

Explanation of label

Following the backlash, Belift Lab provided further clarification in a statement to Billboard.

The agency said, “We have concluded that allowing Hseung to fully focus on his career as a solo artist, rather than pursuing solo activities within the team, would be the most gratifying approach for both Enhypen and Hseung.”

This is not the first time K-pop has faced this dilemma. Hseung’s situation may seem dramatic, but the tension between group identity and individual artistry is hardly anything new in K-pop.

For example, the members of EXO built strong individual careers while remaining active in the group. Artists such as Baekhyun, Kai, and Chen have released chart-topping solo albums while continuing group promotions. Of course, this was before the arrangement ended due to a legal dispute between CBX and SM Entertainment.

A similar dynamic exists within BTS, where members like RM, J-Hope, and Suga developed strong solo discographies in the form of group activities as well as singles, mixtapes, and more before they officially launched their solo careers prior to their military enlistment. TXT’s Yeonjun has started his solo career in between his group activities. Seventeen members have been releasing group work as well as sub-unit and solo works.

There are also cases where the balance proved more complex. The members of GOT7 eventually left their agency in 2021 to pursue individual careers. However, they have continued to reunite for group projects whenever possible.

enhyphen status

ENHYPEN’s rapid global success meant that the group entered the high-intensity touring and album cycle earlier than many of their peers.

Balancing that momentum with the launch of a major solo career, especially for a central member like Hseung, may require a restructuring of the existing structure. In that sense, Hseung’s departure may reflect the structural reality of the idol system: the moment an artist begins to move beyond the framework designed for them. This also shows that pursuing a solo career within a group framework can double the workload on the artist and, in Hseung’s case, even double the burnout.

This explanation is almost implicit in the agency’s recent statement. He noted, “ENHYPEN’s schedule remains extremely demanding, making it difficult for the members to develop independent music projects while maintaining full group activities.”

More worryingly, this leaves idols with no choice but to either opt for complete exhaustion as the price of their ambitions or bury their ambitions of a solo career in order to remain a part of the group they love.

what happens next

Heesung is expected to debut as a solo artist under BELIFT LAB, while ENHYPEN will continue activities as a six-member group.

But the scale of fan mobilization shows that the debate over his departure is far from over. In fact, if this reveals anything, it’s this: fans increasingly want a future where idols don’t have to choose between being part of a group and becoming fully realized artists in their own right.

Meanwhile, the remaining six members of ENHYPEN – Jungwon, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo and Ni-ki – have remained active and urged fans to continue supporting ENGENES.
