How AI helped Pope Leo XIV choose their name
While Pope Leo XIV agrees that AI helped him take his name, he recognizes AI as a challenge for human dignity.
Listen to the story

During his first formal address as Pope Leo XIV, he reported that his Pope’s name is a child of artificial intelligence. In his speech, he revealed his sinner’s plan and said that AI has not only helped shape his thinking, but is also the choice of his name, Pope Leo XIV. However, he also mentioned that while AI is a useful tool, it faces challenges to defend human dignity, justice and labor.
Two days after his election, Chicago-appointed Pope-Formally Robert Francis Prevost addressed the college of Cardinals, calling for the memory of Pope Leo XIII, who thought from 1978 to 1903 from 1978 to 1903 with intelligence from 1978 to 1903. age.
Answering this question, how did AI help him choose the name? He said, “… I chose to take the name Leo XIV. There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution in its historical reliable Raram Novaram.”
He said, “Today, the Church provides all its treasures of social teaching in response to the development of another industrial revolution and artificial intelligence.”
But AI is a challenge for human dignity
In recent years, the Catholic Church has shown increasing concern over the rise of artificial intelligence. A document released by the Vatican in January – is now available in English – as a thoughtful examination of AI, its obstacles, its connections to the truth and the moral ideas around its use and development. The lesson also recalls a caution released by Pope Francis last year, in which he “partially or completely highlighted, believed and transmitted as they were true.”
Pope Leo XIV has highlighted that he will follow the footsteps of Pope Francis, when it comes to dealing with AI’s increasing age. He quoted that Raram Novaram (which was first published in 1891) faced the plight and rights of workers during the disturbed rise of industrial society and planned to work in the same way. In its comment for cardinals, Pope Leo XIV stated that the church should now fulfill the moral dilemmas of the digital age – especially with artificial intelligence – with uniform punishment and moral resolve.
“In our own day, the church offers to all in response to another industrial revolution and in the field of artificial intelligence, which faces new challenges to protect human dignity, justice and labor,” he said.
Pope Leo XIV’s comments created the long -standing concerns by their predecessors. Pope Francis was vocal about AI concerns and often talked about potential benefits and risks associated with artificial intelligence.
In 2023, he became a goal of AI-powered deception when a fake image of a white designer puffer jacket was widely spread online. A year later, speaking in the Vatican City, he warned against the medical visuals that “looks completely admirable but wrong.”
Later that year, speaking at the G7 Summit, Francis called for the international agreement on “Algor-Athics”-guiding the use of AI technologies.
“This is clearly seen in the example of many of my predecessors, and recently with the example of full dedication to Pope Francis for self -service and simplicity of life, his abandonment to God for God in his ministry and his calm confidence in his return moment to the father’s house,” Pope Leo told the gathering. “Let us raise this precious heritage and continue on the journey, inspired by the same hope that is born of faith.”
