Hollywood actor John Cusack has joined the growing list of public figures to express support towards the students protesting against the NEET-UG paper leak. Days after clashes broke out between protesters and Delhi Police during the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) ‘Chalo Sansad’ march in the national capital, Cusack shared an article by writer-activist Arundhati Roy in solidarity with the movement.

This is not the first time Cusack has publicly supported student movements in India. In 2019, he supported the protests against the amended Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and criticized police action against students at Jamia Millia Islamia University.

All about CJP’s protest at Jantar Mantar

The protests intensified on Monday after thousands of students and supporters gathered in Delhi in response to CJP’s ‘Chalo Sansad’ call. The protesters demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak and other alleged irregularities in the country’s examination system.

Delhi Police alleged that the protesters displayed “unruly, aggressive and violent behaviour” and refused to disperse despite repeated warnings, violating prohibitory orders in force. However, the protesters accused the police of using excessive force and claimed that they were indiscriminately lathicharged.

Several videos circulated on social media showed police using batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. The protesters also claimed that some persons in plain clothes without police identification attacked the protesters.

On July 22, fresh clashes were reported on Parliament Street after protesters gathered on the main road. While police fired tear gas shells to control the crowd, some protesters reportedly pelted stones near Connaught Place and chased police personnel. According to Delhi Police, five personnel including two ACPs, an inspector, a head constable and a constable were injured in the violence.

Earlier this month, social activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the movement and launched a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in support of the students. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also joined the protests earlier this week, protesting outside the Prime Minister’s residence along with Congress leaders before being detained by police.

The film industry is rallying in support of the students.

Cusack’s post came as the protest received support from both Indian and international voices. Actors Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Alia Bhatt and many other film personalities have recently come out to support the students.

In a lengthy Instagram post shared on Wednesday night, Salman Khan described the paper leak as “a very serious issue” and wrote, “This was a peaceful movement, I am deeply saddened that it had to take a violent turn. My thoughts are with the students and their families who have been hurt.”
