Side Effects of Salt on Skin: What is the connection between salt and skin health?
According to a study from the University of California – San Francisco, scientists recently discovered that sodium, which most people consume as salt, accumulates in the skin and may play a role in skin inflammation. The findings further suggest that limiting the amount of sodium in the diet may be an easy way for eczema patients to manage their disease.
“Eczema flares can be difficult for patients to deal with, especially when they can’t predict them and don’t have any tips on how to avoid them,” said Katrina Abubara, MD, associate professor of dermatology at UCSF and the study’s corresponding author.
A cross-sectional study of over 215,000 people found that each additional gram of sodium excreted in the urine over 24 hours was associated with an 11 percent higher chance of being diagnosed with eczema. It also found that people were 16 percent more likely to have an active case, and 11 percent more likely to have an increased severity.
The findings state that, “Eating just one extra gram of sodium per day, or about half a teaspoon of salt, increases a person’s risk of having an active case of eczema by 22 percent.”

2. Do not sprinkle salt on food:
Do you know why it is forbidden to add salt after cooking? It is said that after cooking salt, its iron structure changes and it becomes easier for our body to digest it.
3. Consume pickles and chutneys in limited quantities:
Pickles make food taste better but spicy pickles are also high in sodium and trans-fat; hence, consume it in limited quantity.
4. Use spices and herbs:
Herbs are a great dressing for your meals. They help prevent high blood pressure and their anti-inflammatory properties help boost our immunity.
