"Hard day for us": John Hopkins University fire of over 2,000 employees

The prestigious Johns Hopkins University said that more than 2,000 employees are being forced to close after a huge decrease in foreign aid funding of Trump administration on Thursday.

A major institute of scientific research said in a statement, “This is a difficult day for our entire community. The termination of more than $ 800 million in USAID funding is now forcing us to do important work here and internationally.”

Hopkins, one -hour drive to the north of the US capital in the largest city in Maryland, finishing more than 2,000 positions – 1,975 in projects in 44 countries and 247 jobs in the United States.

Cuts affect several major programs, including the university’s medical school and school of public health, and JHPIEGO, a global health non-profit organization, which was established in the university more than 50 years ago and which works to improve health in countries around the world.

“Johns Hopkins is very proud of our colleagues to take care of mothers and infants in Jhpiego, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and School of Medicine, fighting disease, providing clean drinking water, and other important, life-saving efforts around the world.”

Cuts make Johns Hopkins one of the most depth affected universities with a slash of federal funds for research.

According to the New York Times, the university has received around $ 1 billion annually in funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and currently saying that Hopkins is one of the plaintiffs challenging such a cut.

The largest funding agency for the US Agency for International Development (USAID), JHPIEGO, distributes humanitarian aids worldwide with health and emergency programs in about 120 countries.

US President Donald Trump, who is destroying the humanitarian agency, signed an executive order in January, demanding a freeze on all US foreign aids to allow time to assess foreign expenses. Critics warned that millions of people would be affected by reducing USAID work.
