Speaking at the annual general meeting of Berkshire Hathaway in Omaha on May 3, Buffett emphasized the importance of the surroundings with the right people. “It is very important to whom you join,” he said. “You are progressing your life in the general direction of the people you work with, which you appreciate, they become your friends.”
He believes that such organizations lead not only to professional development, but also to personal fulfillment. Buffett added, “You just won’t learn how to succeed in business, you will learn how to succeed in life.”
He requested the youth to look for a career that they were ready to do it even without financial promotion. “What you really are looking for in life is something where you get a job, but you don’t need money,” he said. “I had it for a very long time.”
Buffett warned against joining people or businesses who need to compromise on one’s values. He warned, “You don’t want to join people or adventures that tell you something that you should not do.”
Reflecting his early career, Buffett shared a story about meeting the mentor by chance. “In 10 minutes, I found that I was a man who was being surprisingly helpful to me,” he remembered. He added that mutual goodwill often leads to tolerant, positive relationships: “You get a combination of good intentions and good behavior.”
Summarizing his philosophy, Buffett linked happiness to life: “A happy person lives more lives than someone he does not appreciate much in life,” he said. “And for some reason, I obviously live long.”
