Concerns are increasing about the weakness of the world’s oldest democracy.

American voters are anxious about the upcoming presidential election, with fears about political violence, efforts to overturn election results, and broader impacts on democracy.

According to findings of a poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 40% of registered voters say they are “extremely” or “very” concerned about violent attempts to overturn the election results.

Republican nominee Donald Trump’s frequent claims of election fraud and predictions that he could only lose if the election was rigged against him have contributed to these concerns.

Nearly 90% of registered voters believe the loser of the presidential election should concede once vote counting in every state is complete and legal challenges are resolved. However, only one-third of voters expect Trump to accept and concede the results.

Having said that, Democrats and Republicans have very different views regarding their willingness to acquiesce to Trump. Nearly two-thirds of Republican voters think Trump will concede, while only 1 in 10 Democrats agree. By contrast, about 8 in 10 voters believe Harris will accept the results and concede if she loses, including a majority of Republican voters.

As far as democracy is concerned, Democrats and Republicans are divided in their views. Nearly half of voters believe Trump would weaken democracy “very much” or “somewhat,” while 40% of voters said the same for Harris.

It’s no surprise that a deep ideological gulf divides Americans and one reason for such a stark difference is the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, for which Democrats and independents said either “a great deal” or “a great deal.” A little” is kept. The responsibility is on Donald Trump.

Apart from the January 6 attack, there are many other parameters on which American ideologies collide. The use of the Electoral College to elect the President in place of the popular vote is very important.

As the country teeters on the brink of uncertainty, the results of this election will reverberate far beyond the ballot box, shaping American democracy as well as having global impact.
