Google is testing a new Android theft identity lock: How does it work?

At Google I/O 2024, the tech giant introduced a new theft detection lock for Android phones that uses artificial intelligence to identify when a phone is stolen. Recently, Google announced that Brazil will be the first country to test this feature. The anti-theft feature for Android phones offers a technology that will lock the device if it is stolen.

The new anti-theft feature aims to protect user data stored on the phone. According to Google, the new set of features will protect users before, during or after a theft case. Recognizing the unpredictable and stressful nature of such incidents, these features are designed to immediately secure user data when suspicious activity is detected.

According to the report, this feature will have three types of locks in the initial test phase. In one of these locks, Google will use AI which is designed to recognize signs of common actions related to theft. This feature is built with technology that will recognize these actions and block the screen.

The second feature allows users to remotely lock the device’s screen by entering a phone number and completing a security challenge from another device. The last mode involves automatically locking the screen when the device is left without internet access for a long period of time.

According to the company, these features will be available to users of Android phones in Brazil running version 10 or higher starting in July. Google said that these will be gradually released to users in other countries this year.

Google’s Theft Detection Lock: In Detail

The new theft detection lock is built with an improved factory reset security skill that makes it difficult for thieves to reset stolen devices and resell them. With this feature, if a device is stolen, it will be impossible to sell it without the owner’s credentials, significantly reducing the incentive for theft.

Another feature is the Private Space feature, which is designed to keep sensitive apps and data safe from unauthorized access. By creating a separate, secure area within the phone, users will be able to hide and lock apps containing personal information such as health or financial data, providing an additional layer of protection against data breaches.

Additionally, Google is also implementing stricter authentication requirements for changing sensitive device settings, such as disabling Find My Device or increasing the screen timeout. This update will ensure that even if a thief gains access to a device, they will need the owner’s PIN, password, or biometric authentication to make critical changes, thereby protecting user data and privacy.

Notably, these security enhancements will be rolled out as part of Android 15, and select devices will receive advanced authentication security later this year.
