Google has officially launched a new feature called Identity Check for select devices globally, which aims to add an extra layer of security to Android devices. This feature is designed to deal with scenarios where someone can gain access to your device even if they know your passcode, PIN, or password. With Identity Verification, users will now have to authenticate themselves using biometrics such as fingerprint or facial recognition when attempting to access sensitive account or device settings. This follows the company’s broader efforts to protect user data in case of theft, including tools like Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock.
This additional security measure is activated only when your device is outside of trusted locations, such as your home. Google hopes identity checks will make it harder for thieves to disable anti-theft features or change your security settings. However, this feature won’t be very helpful if the person accessing your phone is already in one of these trusted locations.
The concept behind identity checking is not entirely new. Rumors about it started spreading last year itself, pointing towards its development. Now, with the feature officially available, we have a clearer picture of how it works.
When you’re away from your trusted locations, any attempt to access critical settings – like changing your device’s PIN, disabling theft protection, or even accessing Google’s passkey – will result in biometric Will trigger an authentication request. This ensures that only the rightful owner can make such changes, even if someone else has access to their password.
Google detailed how the feature integrates with its theft protection toolset, which already includes useful security measures. For example, a theft detection lock automatically locks your device if it detects that someone has snatched it out of your hand. Similarly, Offline Device Lock ensures that your phone locks immediately after going offline. These features, introduced in late 2024, are now available on Android 10 and newer devices globally.
The rollout of Identity Check begins with Pixel phones running Android 15 QPR1 stable and eligible Samsung Galaxy devices on One UI 7. Users can access the feature by going to Settings > Google services and preferences, select your primary Google account > All services > Theft. Security. The update is likely being rolled out through the Find My Device app or Play Services.
As of now, other Android device manufacturers are expected to bring the identity check feature to their phones later this year.
