Google has announced that ChromeOS will soon undergo a makeover. According to the company, a large part of ChromeOS will be the Android stack. With this update, Google aims to bring AI features to ChromeOS at a faster pace. The tech giant said that it will adopt things like the Android Linux kernel and Android framework “as part of the foundation of ChromeOS.”

In a detailed blog, Google explained that these changes will not be limited to just AI features. They said that these changes will also help streamline engineering efforts and help different devices like phones and accessories work better with Chromebooks.

With these recent announcements about new features powered by Google AI and Gemini, Chromebooks now offer an opportunity to put powerful tools in the hands of more people to help with everyday tasks.

“To continue bringing new Google AI features to users faster and at scale, we will adopt parts of the Android stack, such as the Android Linux kernel and Android Framework, as part of the foundation of ChromeOS,” the blogpost said.

Additionally, Google has said that they will continue to deliver the unmatched security, consistent look and feel, and extensive management capabilities that ChromeOS users, enterprises, and schools love.

These improvements to the tech stack are rolling out now, but won’t be ready for consumers for quite some time. When they’re ready, Google will provide a seamless transition to the updated experience.

Meanwhile, ChromeOS will continue without any changes with regular software updates and new innovations.

This isn’t the first time the Chrome and Android teams are coming together. The two groups have previously worked together to make Android apps run on Chromebooks. They’ve also worked together to bring Android’s Bluetooth technology to ChromeOS.
