According to Google’s chief scientist Jeff Dean, AI may be close to working as a junior software engineer. during AI Asent Event of Seven CapitalDean said that it could only be “about one year-old”, before the artificial intelligence reaches the skill level of an entry level coder. Although this may look futuristic, it is a scene that aligns with many technical leaders as AI continues to improve rapidly, especially in tasks such as coding. At a time when jobs in the tech are already rare and competition is fierce, especially for fresh graduates, it can mean even more pressure on entry level engineers.

Dean’s comments come in the form of generic AI tools such as chatup, Githb Copilot, and Google’s own Gemini, become rapidly common among developers. These devices are being used to automate already repeated coding tasks, provide real -time suggestions, and even generate full blocks of code. But Dean also said that writing code in an IDE (integrated development environment) is only part of junior engineers.

“This imaginary virtual engineer probably needs a better understanding of many more things than writing code in an IDE,” Dean said. Commercial insider Report. “It is necessary to know how to run tests, debug displays and all those types of things.”

Asked how AI can eventually learn these comprehensive engineering skills, Dean compared how real people gain experience – learning tools, studying documentation and learning from more experienced colleagues. “We know how human engineers do those things,” he explained. “They learn how to use various devices to us, and can use them to complete them. And they get that knowledge from more experienced engineers, usually, or reading a lot of documents.”

Dean believes that AI can do something similar – trying to solve a solution in a virtual environment, learning from documentation and improving over time. “I think a junior virtual engineer is going to be great in reading documentation and trying things in the virtual environment,” he said. “Some of these things seem to be better and better on some of these things.”

However, he did not say how far it can go, Dean feels that it is going to make a meaningful difference. “I don’t know how far it will take us, but it seems that it will take us far away,” he said.

Google has not responded Commercial insider Request for comment at the time of publication.
