Gatorwine: A bizarre drink trend that’s taking social media by storm

Must read

From roasted milk tea to rice paper croissants, a number of unusual recipes have taken social media by storm in the past year. Foodies often try to make these viral creations at home and decide for themselves whether they are worth the buzz. While some experimental recipes are praised, some are criticized because they destroy people’s favorite taste. One of the unique drinks currently going viral is “Gatorwine”. As the name suggests, it is a mixture of Gatorade and cheap red wine (it should cost less than $12 per bottle, according to the trend).

Light blue Gatorade has been called the “ideal” choice for this viral drink. A video featuring GatorWine has garnered a lot of attention which was shared by YouTuber and cook, Andrew Rea (also known as “Binging with Babish”). During a special tasting segment on his YouTube channel, he is seen ranking some of the “weird recipes” suggested by his followers. One of them is GatorWine, which is made by mixing equal parts of two-ingredient liquids.

After taking a sip, he declares, “This is different than any drink I’ve ever tasted. I don’t know what to do about it. Because if I’m being honest, I’d rather drink this than Barefoot or Yellowtail. Does that make me arrogant or does it make me cool? I don’t know,” he laughs and adds that he would drink Gatorwine “on the rocks.” He clarifies, “The more I drink it, the more I like it.” He also compares it to sangria because of Gatorade’s so-called ‘fruity’ notes. He says, “I don’t like it as much as sangria, but I don’t like it any less either.” He initially ranks it 6/10. He drinks the drink with other foods in the episode and later raises its ranking to 7.

YouTube user @GoatsNowhere, who submitted the GatorWine idea for the testing session, commented below, “I am the GatorWine creator! I’ve been ridiculed for nearly a decade, and I will play this video to my grave.”

Inspired by the trend, social media users are also creating Gatorvines and sharing their thoughts on it. Ree’s reaction to Gatorvines has caught people’s attention on other platforms as well. Her reel on Instagram has garnered over 3 million views so far. Check out some of the reactions from Instagram below:

“So I made this last night. Is it gross…yes. Did I even drink 3 glasses yes. It’s like Gatorade turns wine back into grape juice, but not good grape juice like artificially flavored Capri Sun grape juice.”

“Kendall pouring the initial batch from a measuring cup is really giving Gatorwine the dignity it doesn’t deserve.”

“I like that technically the flavors of both beverages can be identified simply by their colors.”

“Enthusiasm for gatorvine is questionable behavior.”

“Sauvignon Blanc and Cucumber Lime Gatorade is a better combination.”

“Next time try Coca-Cola and wine, it’s called the poor man’s sangria…tried it once, it wasn’t too bad.”
