Actress Kangana Ranaut, in an exclusive interview, revisits the fiery and neurotic roles that shaped her early image. He said that each stage of his career helped him resist typecasting and move towards new characters.

Actress and politician Kangana Ranaut has recalled that she was once known for playing “edgy”, “neurotic” and “suicidal” characters, saying those roles defined her early screen image but did not determine the direction of her career. On completing 20 years in the industry, Ranaut said that not a single film changed her journey. Each stage of his work pushed him in a different direction.

In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Ranaut said that her career has gone through different phases, starting from emotionally turbulent roles before shifting to comedy and girl-next-door roles, then to leadership figures, and now towards portraying what she calls a “very basic woman”. He said that these changes came from his effort to avoid being stuck in one type of role and maintain diversity in his career.

When asked if there was one film that changed the direction of her career, Ranaut said that it was difficult to choose any one project as every phase of her filmography played a role in shaping her development as an actor.

“You know, all the movies have made such a deep impact and pushed me in different directions. Now, as she has completed two decades in the industry, Ranaut said she is entering another phase in her artistic journey. “And now there’s a phase where I’m going to portray the very basic woman, the unseen woman who blends into the background and who no one really pays attention to. So, that’s the next phase.”

Ranaut said that every phase of her career has been important as each change came from her desire to challenge expectations and break away from typecasting. “They are all equally important because whenever I felt typecast, I wanted to break out of that cage. I think that has given me a lot of diversity in my career,” she said.
