Is it time to go back to the 90s? We tell you about five big fashion trends of 2024 that indicate just that.

Fashion trends are cyclical. They make a remarkable entrance and then vanish in vain, only to make a major comeback years (or decades) later. Currently, the fashion world is seeing a resurgence of some classic 90s fashion trends, making millennials feel like they’re old enough to live through a full fashion cycle. Runways, celebrity apparel choices and Gen Z are all combining to bring them back.

Here are the 5 biggest trends from the 90s that you should embrace in 2024 (even if your millennial heart rejects them). PS: If you are one of those people who hates knee-length school socks and wraps them up to the ankles, there is a surprise waiting for you below. Read on…

capris

Capris, cropped pants or pedal pushers – call them by any name – but it is true that they are back in trend. The controversial trousers that ruled the fashion world in the 90s and 2000s have once again emerged as a major trend for summer and spring.

Fashion’s favorite sisters Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid are leading the comeback of capris. And if you think capris are only for grocery shopping or spending a relaxing afternoon at home, you’re wrong.

Take a cue from Gigi Hadid who gave denim capris a fancy twist with a touch of gold. She styled her denim capris with a black tank top (another popular 90s trend) paired with black stilettos and some chunky golden jewellery.

This year also saw its comeback on the runway, with brands like Coperni and 16Arlington showcasing them in their new collections.

Slip Dresses

If you grew up in the 90s, you know that slip dresses were all the rage. Figure-hugging sleeveless dresses painted a flattering picture. In 2024, they’re back, but without the lacy detail.

Slip dresses in 2024 are bold and eye-catching. Think sharp side-slits, plunging necklines, structured bodices, and bright color palettes that go beyond classic black and white.

However, the versatility of a classic slip dress is unmatched. Wear it with a pair of loafers and you are ready for work. For a fun night out, wear your party heels and style it with some shiny jewellery.

Along with this, camisole straps, spaghetti straps and tank tops are also becoming popular again.

Ballet flats

From Chanel to Gucci, the biggest fashion shows of the year saw the return of ballet flats.

Ballerina-inspired pointed flat shoes worn by ballet dancers were extremely popular in the 90s. They have made their way onto the fashion radar once again. But this time the range to choose from is much wider – like shiny latex pairs in black and maroon, or embellished shoes with strap details.

Beyond the classics, a major sub-trend emerging in the field of ballet flats are shoes with mesh details. Taking a look at the new collections of brands like Miu Miu, Magda Butrym and The Row, you will agree with this too.

By the way, Taylor Swift has also embraced this fashion comeback wholeheartedly!

long socks

You no longer need to hide your socks, but instead showing them off and making them an integral part of your outfit is the fashion mantra of the moment. Is this scary for millennials? Maybe.

Millennials, who grew up hating their long school socks, love their ankle-length socks. But guess what, Gen Z has brought long socks back in a stylish way. Socks, like other aspects of a look, are an influencer of the outfit.

Remember how wearing socks with Birkenstocks was the coolest trend of 2023? We mean, it still is, but it’s been made even better and can be worn with heels, Crocs, and regular shoes as well. Whether it’s a summer dress, a blazer and shorts set, a skirt, or your wide-legged denims, show off that cool pair of socks.

P.S.: It doesn’t have to be fancy! It can also complement the basic color of a simple outfit.

90s lips

Wearing a dark lip liner and a light shade of lipstick and a high-shine gloss over it is a classic 90s look. It will be cool to wear it in 2024. Liner not only enhances your lips but also enhances your beauty. From Rihanna to Janhvi Kapoor, everyone loves it.

Pro tip: Instead of sticky lip gloss, use nourishing lip oil which will not only nourish your lips but also make them shiny.
