Apple is rumored to be working on a new smart doorbell camera that uses Face ID to unlock your door, Mark Gurman has revealed in his weekly newsletter published at Bloomberg. Slated for potential release by the end of 2025, this device could change the way we use home security devices. According to Gurman, the smart doorbell will work similarly to Face ID on the iPhone, automatically unlocking the door when it recognizes you or other residents. Like other Apple devices, it is expected to feature the Secure Enclave chip, which processes and stores biometric data independently of the main hardware, ensuring better privacy.

Mark Gurman suggests that the doorbell could be compatible with existing third-party HomeKit smart locks, providing flexibility for Apple users already invested in the ecosystem. Alternatively, Apple could collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer to deliver a comprehensive system at launch. The device will likely take advantage of Apple’s in-house “Proxima” chip, a hybrid Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology that is rumored to power the next-generation HomePod mini and Apple TV products.

This ambitious smart doorbell project is part of a larger effort by Apple to expand its smart home ecosystem under the umbrella of Apple Intelligence. Apart from doorbells, the company is also working on a range of innovative smart home products. These include a new smart home hub with a 6-inch display for controlling devices, FaceTime calls and video playback. Additionally, Apple is reportedly developing a security camera to complement the Hub, integrating privacy-focused features into its offerings.

While the Face ID-equipped doorbell aims to rival established players like Amazon Ring, it also raises potential security concerns. Critics say that any malfunction or exploitation of the system could lead to significant risks such as unauthorized access to homes. However, Apple has a strong track record of prioritizing user privacy, which could give it an edge in this area.

The doorbell camera is in the early development stage, which means its final features and release date are still uncertain. If successful, this device could bring a new level of convenience and security to Apple users while seamlessly integrating with the company’s broader ecosystem.

Apple’s vision for the smart home isn’t limited to doorbells. Reports suggest the company is exploring other innovations, such as an iPad-like smart display that magnetically attaches to walls or speaker bases, and even a display mounted on a robotic arm. These additions highlight Apple’s commitment to making the smart home experience more intuitive, interactive, and user-friendly.
