The holy trinity of men’s tennis is made up of three names – Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Pick any of these names and the debate is on who is the best among them. Each of these men has displayed exemplary sportsmanship and an impeccable sense of humility throughout their illustrious careers. Prime Video’s latest documentary, Federer: Twelve Final Days, gives us a glimpse into the life of one of the names in this trinity – Roger Federer. A private man who has let his work on the court speak for itself, getting an up close and personal glimpse into his life is not only pure pleasure but also a great privilege.

Federer: Twelve Final Days is directed by Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia. The title is self-explanatory. This documentary shows the last 12 days of Federer’s long and illustrious career, from announcing his retirement to playing his final doubles match with Nadal at the 2022 Laver Cup. Even if you are not a tennis fan or have not followed his career, Twelve Final Days is worth watching.

Interestingly, another player who is heavily featured in the documentary is Federer’s friend and arch-rival on the court – Rafael Nadal. The makers speak to family, friends, sports experts; take sound bytes from everyone who has something to say about the man and his game. The pace doesn’t slow down as we move from one chapter of his life to the next.

There is no room for argument, as Federer’s competitive spirit has never allowed any room for complacency. So in most scenes you will find tributes, insightful anecdotes, never-before-seen moments on and off the court that will delight any tennis fan. The great thing about the film is that it goes beyond being just another sports documentary. It presents the essence of Federer without glorifying him or placing him on a pedestal. It humanizes him without making him look like a god.

Seeing his peers like Nadal, Andy Murray and Djokovic get emotional and cry over this man is proof that underneath the facade of that tough player is a man who wants to achieve every dream possible for himself and make his family proud. If you are a fan, you will love this documentary and if you are not, you will become one after watching it.

Federer: Twelve Final Days is streaming on Prime Video.
