Ram Gopal Varma recently sat down for an exclusive unfiltered and in-depth conversation with Pinkvilla, where the Shiva director was interviewed on a variety of topics. As he got candid about his opinions and shared insights on films, the filmmaker also revealed a bitter truth about the Telugu film industry that many ignore.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, Ram Gopal Varma said, “The harsh truth about the Telugu film industry is that…it actually makes as many flops as Bollywood does. It’s just a misconception that people have of thinking otherwise.”

“Only the best Telugu films come here. So Bollywood has this misconception that all films from the South are good, which is not true,” the filmmaker said.

Apart from his comments on Telugu cinema, RGV also talked at length about Rangeela, Sarkar and other films. He also raised questions on why he considered Sridevi as his favorite actress, emphasizing that it was not just because she was a great artist.

Shiva re-release

Ram Gopal Varma recently made headlines after re-releasing his iconic film Shiva in theaters with 4K restoration on November 14, 2025. The Nagarjuna Akkineni-starrer is a cult classic action film that marked the filmmaker’s debut in Indian cinema.

The story revolves around a young man named Shiva who joins a college in Hyderabad after living with his elder brother and family. Upon his arrival, he realizes the impact of politics and gang warfare within the campus, eventually getting into a feud with JD, a bastard and student body president.

However, things take a drastic turn when Shiva enters the underworld of Hyderabad’s crime world, unleashes chaos and confronts local crime boss Bhavani.

Apart from Nagarjuna, the film stars Amala, Raghuvaran, Vishwanath, Tanikella Bharani, Jeetendra, Murali Mohan, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Gollapudi Maruthi Rao, Sai Chand, Subhalekha Sudhakar, JD Chakraborty and many others in lead roles.

Looking ahead, RGV is currently shooting for his next film, Ghost in the Police Station, a horror comedy starring Manoj Bajpayee, Ramya Krishnan and Genelia Deshmukh.
