Parvathy Thiruvothu on stopping using the term ‘women-oriented’

Speaking with Pinkvilla, Parvathy Thiruvothu said, “Toofan, simply put, we leave out a lot of bureaucracy, but somehow we may end up getting the wrong end of the stick. This is Ajithpal’s directorial debut, so a lot of you may trust but this time he has chosen five women to portray what happens in the society. It has been my dream that we start making films and not say things like ‘women-oriented’, It’s a process to get to that point.”

The actress further added, “I remember a panel discussion about 9 years ago where I was in a debate with a fellow feminist colleague of mine who advocated that the term ‘women-oriented’ was important. I said, yes but ultimately, I would like the stories to be just human-oriented and not gendered. Currently, it is important for that to happen because of the lack of it. It is not a common phenomenon for women’s stories to be treated as human stories. For some reason, it is really In as much as a woman can relate to a man’s story, a man can relate to a woman’s story, at the end of the day, there is only so much that gender keeps us apart.

Later in the conversation, Parvati also recalled her early experiences in acting. She said, “So, in 7-8 years of this job, I only got lover girl roles. It was either falling in love, falling out of love, chasing love, or waiting for love. I was tired of it. I was thinking, why don’t this girl do something else? She doesn’t have to have a career or kill someone. Like, the dramatic arc of women is either being chosen by a guy, being dumped by a guy, or why there is a yearning for a guy. Now I miss it, like I want romance back, but for the first 8 years, if I kept playing a girl in that specific place, wouldn’t it be like I was doing the same thing in everything?

“Then I had to focus on the individuality of that character, more than what was in the script. When I did Panimalar in Marin, it was very self-affirming, confident, like ‘You do your thing, but I know you’re mine.’ But in real life I was not like that and I had to adopt the same personality and body language,” she added.

Comparing her various characters from films like Poo, Charlie and Ennu Ninte Moideen, Parvathy expressed that it was not about how she looked or what her expressions were, but it was about authenticity and the “love ethic” that she had to follow in her roles.
