Exclusive I Saali Mohabbat’s Radhika Apte: Not big on morality, but big on morality
Actress Radhika Apte discusses her selective approach towards roles, sharp instincts and exploration of complexity. Apte, who stars in ‘Saali Mohabbat’, spoke to India Today on drawing the line based on the film’s moral vision, seeing morality as a “society-constructed thing” that hinders empathy.

Radhika Apte has never been an actress satisfied with the surface. Known for her fiery attitude and refusal to follow the familiar, comfortable path, Apte once again underlined why she remains one of the most compelling voices in the industry. with his role in sister loveDirected by Tisca Chopra, Apte walks the thin line between morality and ethics. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, he opened up about his mindset behind choosing roles.
Speaking about his approach to roles and the larger political pulse of his films, Apte is extremely candid. “I don’t think my moral compass comes in the way of a character and their choices,” she says. “But it definitely gets in the way of the overall film. What is the film trying to say? What is the story, what is the point of view of the makers? If I disagree with that point of view, that’s where I draw the line,” she tells India Today.
In typical Apte fashion, she says nothing about the difference between morality and ethics. “I’m not very high on morals in life,” she admits with a shrug. “Morality is a society-constructed thing, created by people who want to establish a certain kind of power. Everything changes with context. But morality, that’s what I’m big on,” says the actor.
For sister love According to the actor, the politics and value system of a film matter more than whether a character is “good” or “bad”. The characters, she says, are never evaluated, only scrutinized. “It’s much more interesting to play different, complex people. When you start to analyze their psyche, the moment you ask: Why is someone doing this?, your judgment goes away. Suddenly you become more empathetic, seeing them from a deeper, more honest perspective.”
