Veteran film director David Dhawan is currently busy promoting his upcoming film Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The filmmaker exclusively interacted with Pinkvilla and talked about the film, his journey, reflecting on his rich filmography and chemistry with Salman Khan, Govinda, Sanjay Dutt and other actors.
During the conversation, David Dhawan was asked that if his 90s blockbuster film Shola Aur Shabnam were made today, which actor could bring it on screen. Responding to the same, the director mentioned that it would require a strong actor to balance the intensity and comedy together on screen. He said, “It’s one of my favorite films. You need a very intense guy to do it. The first half is entertainment, the second half is full (drama). But there are new guys too.”
He then chose Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda to play the lead roles in Today’s Generation’s Shola and Shabnam. David Dhawan said, “She can do what Saira has, and the same girl, the same pair. Both of them, Shola and Shabnam, can do it. It’s a classic subject.” When he was asked which of his 90s films can break box office records even today, he immediately replied with ‘Aankhen’ and ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’.

Talking about David Dhawan’s ‘Hai Jawaani To Ishq Hona Hai’, the film stars Varun Dhawan in the lead role, along with Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles. The romantic comedy drama is set to release on screens on May 22, 2026. The teaser was released a few days ago, followed by a banging musical track. This could be David Dhawan’s last film as he is reportedly retiring from direction.
